What to include

DVD cover research

Before i began creating my DVD cover i decided that i needed to do a bit of research online as to what average DVD covers look like.
I gathered of few pf my favourite of the internet and uploaded them onto my blog so that i would have a go0d understanding of what sort of guidlines/ templates to include on my own DVD cover. Here is a few examples

CHoosing My photo

As despite having a large number of photos, i only had 2 varietys. The Close up of just faces or a full body shot of the girls wearing bright tights.
I picked One out of each category that i felt looked the most proffesional and clearest and decided to ask my audience which one they preffered.
Again i used a chart method and asked a sample of people between the age of 15 - 18 as they were my main target audience.

Inspiration

Here is an image of the photo I took and the Girl band that inspired it , side by side to see how they compare.

I edited my photo by changing it to black and white and then by using PAINTSHOP PRO to select the Girls tights and used the tool colourize to enhance the colour. Here is what it looked like

As you can see Here i copied the idea of Using a completely Black background with just the girls faces to draw attention to their face.

After referring back to my Girl Band mind map i decided that i liked the Idea of using bold seperate colours for each member of the band and did soemthing similar myself.

Here is a photo of a draft layout i have drawen so that i can use it as a guideline for when i begin to create the magazine on Indesighn.
I have uploaded it through using my Mobile then sending it to facebook then uploading it to blogger.

What to include

After deciding on my font it was time to start creating my Magazine advertisement , first i needed to decide what was to be included on it.

After looking through a vartiety of magazines such as Nme , Kerrang e.t.c i realised that the main focuse of the page was to be the band i was advertising so i would need a good photo of them with a big heading.
I also needed ot include
1. A small photo of their album
2. Tour dates
3. A small Logo for itunes e.t.c
4. another sub heading advertising something for the band

Choosing a Font.

After visiting the font website I tried out a variety of different fonts that I felt were suitable for a girl band.

Here is a few examples of the ones i felt looked the best and the Chosen one.

Although i really liked all of these Fonts I decided on one that seemed most suitable as it actually looked like a Lipstick smear and i stuck a symbol of Lips at the end to add effect.

Title Inspiration

Here is a few photos of some band names, i noticed that they all had used quite funky interesting fonts for their names so i wanted to do the same for my own, howerver i decided that the fonts that Microsoft word were offering were not intereting enough so i decided to try out fonts in http://www.dafont.com/

After deciding on my final name I decided i needed to pick an appropriate font for my bands name , I Looked at a few other Bands to see what style other bands had used.

Now i had whittled down the Names to just three i decided to create a chart and bring it around my Sixth form common room and get them to put a dash by the name they liked the most and felt i should use.

As you can see, out of the 21 people i asked , The Lipsticks came out overall on top.

Choosing my band name

After gathering some ideas for what type of band i wanted to create by looking at other girl bands i decided it was time for me to choose a suitbale band name for my Girl band.
To start with I picked some of my favourite and popular girl bands that are Famous.
I thought of ones such as

• The Spice Girls
• The saturdays
• The Pussycat Dolls
• The Sugababes

I noticed that with all these bands they started with ` THE` Before the actual name of the band so decided i would also follow this idea.

Next up was to decide the name of the actual band - i began gathering ideas from myself and friends.

Band Photos analysis

Music artists mood board

I put together a mood board of all different girl bands which had been photogrpahed focusing mainly on there faces , using extreme close ups as this is the type of photo i wished to follow for my own band and my own advertisement. I created this mood board as it allowed me to look back on it at any time when creating my minor task

I then decided to look up photographs of different artists and the way they are photographed for things such as a magazines and posters, So i could get an understanding of how to do it when it came to creating my own band.

Magazine advertisement analysis.

I took a Famous music magazines and found photos of past magazine advertisements.
I now decided to analyse it to make sure i had good understanding of how they are put together and what to include.
In this Advertisement the title of the band is bold and in the top corner of the page, however the image takes up the most of the overall page, around 80%. The coverline used are the arists name and album name . With details of what is included inside the album. such as `unheard footage`. There also the mini record label at teh bootm of the page and HMVs label at the top, to give it publicity.

As you can in this advertisement teh name of the act being advertised takes up a large proportion of the page. It isin a bold font adn takes up around 60% of the page. other coverlines included on the page is details of a live concert, with dates and ticket price infortmation and lcation.

There is also othe rlogos on the page, that probably are from sponsors.There is also a hotline number of how to get tickets

The fonts are all the same but volour and font size vary, to make the advertismetn appear more attractive and catch the readers eye.

Bold bright colours are also uss, such as green, yellow and red.

Software and Difficulties.

To ensure that i make both minor tasks succefully, i had to learn how to use and edit with various different software.
The two most important ones being Photoshop and Adobe Indesgihn.
I used photoshop to edit my original photos, fading out backgrounds, and highlighting photos to ensure the photos standed out as much as possible.

The First Minor Task

After deciding on a desighn breif i decided to begin working on my first minor task. This was the Magzine advertisement. I did some research in magazines and over the internet to gather ideas and inspiration that i could use for my own desighn .
I began my visiting my school library as they offer music magazines just like the one i was planning on creating such as ` Kerrang ` and NME . I paid attention to the differene types of adverts within the magazine, for both single arrtists and Bands, i scanned the magazines to see how they were laid out and what type of things were included - e.g headlines, adverts, photos.I noticed, in all of the magazines the band that the magazine was featuring took up about 50% of the front cover and had a large Title and often a subtitle , they were then surrounded by other logos and tour dates , all things linked with the band. i also did research on the internet , where i looked up other band magzines, jus to ensure i had a good idea and understanding of their layout and had lots of models to follow.

Summer Descions. ( August/ September)

My Chosen brief - A promotion package for the release of an album , to include a music promo video , together with two of the following options:

• A website homepage for the band
• A cover for its release on DVD
• A magazine advertisement for the DVD

Out of the three possible minor tasks i have chosen to do the cover for its release on DVD and a magazine advertisement for the DVD and a magazine advertisement. I chose these two as i enjoy working on both paintshop pro and Indesign and have experience in both programs through GCSE photography so i figured these were both tasks i would enjoy doing and would be most successful in.

Initially i chose to do a promotion package for a new film including a teaser trailer as for my AS coursework i put together a horror trailer and enjoyed doing it , therefore i began in the summer putting together ideas for a horror trailer, however flaws began to show in this plan as i realised i didn't have the right equipment or skills to create the trailer with the special effects needed to the standard i wanted therfore i changed my idea to The Music Video, which i beleived i could make more successfully.
